The dangers of alcohol dependence have been highlighted in research released by the NHS, which has shown that 63 per cent of 11 to 15-year-olds who live in the north-east have consumed an alcoholic beverage. Whereas in London, only 39 per cent had admitted to taking the substance - the lowest regional return.
Chief executive of the NHS information centre Tim Straughan noted that the levels of usage in the capital were "comparatively low". He said: "The report shows there are significant regional differences in the percentages of young people who smoke, drink or use drugs. "The findings are based on data collected over three years from 2006 and it also found that the north-east consumed on average 17. 7 units in the last week, while in London only 11. 3 units had been ingested. Schools secretary Ed Balls recently stated it was imperative that parents properly informed their children of the risks that are associated with underage drinking. Posted by Kim Westhoff
