Professionals 'drink more' than manual workers

The alcohol health risks for professionals may be higher than for manual workers, after it has been revealed that around one-fifth drink at least five days a week. Research published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that those in managerial jobs had an average weekly consumption level of 13. 8 units, whereas routine trade workers only consumed 10. 6 units, over the same period. A second report by the ONS found that adults consumed their largest weekly amount at home - 46 per cent of male drinkers and 57 per cent of females. This compared with 33 per cent and 20 per cent respectively who said that they consumed their largest amounts in a pub or bar.

A recent statement by the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group noted that more research needs to be done into alcohol dependence prevention policies, as additional inquiries are required before any new measures can be introduced. Posted by Natasha Harrison
