Devon doctor 'talks of alcohol health risks'

Alcohol health risks have been revealed in Devon after the medical director of Torbay Hospital stated that more and more young people are dying due to misusing the substance. In Torbay alone, more than 40 people under the age of 18 have been treated for alcohol dependence in the past six months, the BBC reports. Dr John Lowes noted that the effects will mirror the impact of cardiovascular disease and lung cancer 20 to 30 years ago. He told the news provider: "We're going to see the same with the effects of alcohol on our population with people being admitted for a whole range of alcohol-related harm. " The price was not only financial but also social, Dr Lowes added, as society suffered increasing degradation due to drink. It was recently revealed that 6,929 individuals were admitted to hospital in the NHS South East Essex area in 2008-09, the Essex Echo reported. Posted by Natasha Harrison
