'Increased awareness' of alcohol health risks needed

'Increased awareness' of alcohol health risks needed

There needs to be an increased awareness of possible alcohol health risks, according to an expert. Dr Ruth Milton, director of public health for Surrey, noted that any measures that would help highlight the threats associated with alcohol misuse had to be seen as a beneficial move, the Surrey Comet reports. "The way that drinks are promoted, priced and marketed can have a big impact on public perceptions and behaviour," she added. A multi-faceted approach, which sees the major players in the drinks industry come together, is a positive step forward, Dr Milton remarked, as she told the news provider that it will increase knowledge of how many beverages constitutes safe drinking. It was recently announced that only 15 per cent of bottles and cans are carrying the appropriate information on them, as the NHS observed that the drinks industry is failing to live up to a voluntary agreement signed in 2007.
